Meedhoo Island Council today switched on free public Wi-Fi at the harbour front and the main square, the first visible piece of the island’s smart-pole programme. Residents and visitors can connect with a single tap through the "Meedhoo Today" splash, with no forms and no passwords.
Each pole also offers USB and phone charging, and the network’s live status, which poles are online and how busy they are, now glows on the public Island Pulse dashboard. The council says the rollout is being run honestly as a pilot: a small number of poles first, then expansion across the village as the programme proves out.
The connectivity push is paired with the council’s digital-rights commitment: device counts that feed the footfall metric are anonymous, and no personal data is collected to use the network.
