On 17 May 2026, through Presidential Directive No. 12/2026, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu officially established separate Council Secretariats for Addu Meedhoo (Reference No. 1140) and Addu Hulhudhoo (Reference No. 1141). This marks the formal completion of the administrative separation approved by residents in the public referendum of 25 October 2025.
The restructuring means Meedhoo and Hulhudhoo are no longer under the administrative jurisdiction of the Addu City Council, which now oversees the remaining constituencies of Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, and Feydhoo. The new secretariats will manage local municipal services, land administration, and development planning independently.
The separation is part of a broader national local-government reorganisation that also saw the abolition of all Atoll Councils nationwide. For Meedhoo, the establishment of its own secretariat brings the promise of more localised, responsive governance, and the responsibility of building institutional capacity from the ground up.
“Reference No. 1140: Meedhoo now has its own council secretariat, bringing governance closer to the people.”
